Module 3

Activity 1

I started Activity 1 by doing the Ted Data Selfie linked in the instructions. I did this first iteration blindly (i.e., without any knowledge of the questions). Here is my progress up to the “typical day” question. I chose to do pronounced lines to indicate every 5th hour of the day/night since it was practical and the example beside the instruction reminded me of a ruler. For the “do you sing in the show” question, I tried to make the blue circle not too big since I only sing sometimes. I also put it on the morning side of the “typical day” ruler since I only shower in the mornings. For the “dog or cat” question, I just made the required symbol small since I'm not a crazy cat person but I do like cats more than dogs. When it came to the “iPhone or Android” question, I placed both the Apple and Android triangles since I have used both and have no preference. iPhone is my current one, so I made that triangle larger. When answering the “extrovert or introvert” question, I placed the extrovert moon around the “morning person” half-circle since it's more obvious when I'm energetic and not tired, which I'm typically like in the morning. The moon is a little small but still noticeable since I'm not really the stereotypical extrovert. To represent each of my friends I would bring on vacation with me, I chose their favorite colors. I also placed the blurple (blue-y purple) and green friends right beside each other since they are in the same friend group. Here's the final product of my first iteration of the Ted Data Selfie. I like the right side of the piece, but not the left because there's too much negative space from the friend lines being so thin. The dynamics of it feel nice and the viewer's eye gets led around nicely. Though, the bottom half feels too crowded. I decided to rework the final product. I started by thickening the friend lines to make them more visible and fill up some of the negative space. As a result though, the “extrovert” moon and the “adventurous weekend” scribble are getting covered. Continuing with the rework, I reduced teh sizes of the yellow and black half-circles, blue circle, “typical day” ruler, “extrovert” moon, and “adventurous” weekend scribble. I noted that I needed to move the “cat person” symbol because it was getting lost in the red triangle. The “prefer pen” zig-zag looked too thin and out of place because its thinness ruins the balance of the piece. I also hated the weird hot pepper look the “extrovert” moon and “adventurous weekend” scribble have together. It throws off the viewer. Here's the final product of the reworking. I moved the cat person symbol, adjusted the “gladd half full” triangle and little “save money” lines. I increased the thickness of the “prefer pen” zig-zag. I also abolished the weird hot pepper and redesigned the “extrovert” moon along with the “adventurous weekend” scribble. After following the quiz, I wondered if I was being influenced to represent myself a certain way as a result of seeing the example diagrams. Would I have made each symbol bigger or smaller if I had no exmaples? Would the size of each element represent my confidence? I decided to ask one of my friends to do the quiz, but I would simply be reading the instructions to her without showing her any examples. Here's her final result. Unfortunately, she had no time to do another one where she got to look at the examples. I decided to ask my boyfriend to do the quiz as well, again without showing him any examples. Here's his final result. Thankfully, he had time to do another one where he got to look at the examples. Here's my boyfriend's second result where he got to look at the examples. Comparing his two results, it's interesting he kept the “typical day” ruler, “age” dots, and “Android” triangle in the same styles. It was cool to see the comparisons between the two iterations, but I wonder if these would look different if they were in the arts; my friend is in psychology (Bachelor of Science, not Arts) and my boyfriend is in mechanical engineering. I decided to redo the quiz on my iPad. It felt like the example had a different charm from my Figma-made first iterations since it seemed to be drawn on paper. I decided to keep using Figma for the rest of my iterations. This is my progress up to the “adventurous weekend” scribble on my second design. I wanted to see if I could be more intentional with the composition this time. I experimented quite a bit with this green scribble. At first I wanted to see if I could have a little motif at the top with all the different lines, but this scribble was too different from the rest of the lines. I wanted to see how a shorter scribble might do, but this also felt off. I noticed the random negative space on the left, so I wondered if I should fill it, but then I realized the “friends you'd bring on vacation” lines would go there anyway. Retried the line motif at the top without feeling afraid of overlap. Turned out there was a reason to be afriad, haha. I decided to put the “friends” lines on the left side to fill the negative space and then work from there. I liked the diagonal movement going on so I tried to do a diagonal scribble. I wouldn't end up keeping this though. I also tried to see if I could experiment much with the “save money” dashes, but I didn't like how it looked at all. Here's the final design. I ended up doing a scribble at the top like I originally wanted and now it looks good! I tried another design. I wanted to make each element bigger and in a different place on the page. This is my progress up to the “iPhone or Android” question. I wanted to try to oriente the triangles differently but I realized that the “where is your phone at night” line would be less clear if the triangles were like this. I reoriented the triangles and did the “prefer pen” zig-zag. I wanted to keep everything big, but this scribble just looks bad like this. I tried making it smaller, but I didn't like that it was in the same place as all my other designs, so I figured that if I can't make it big, I might as well make it somewhere different. I decided to make it vertical and in the middle since it's been horizontal and on the very top in the rest of the designs. Moving on to the “how do you like to spend your weekend” scribble, I wasn't sure where to put it. I tried putting it on the right side, but in the rest of my designs, the right side always felt really crowded. I decided putting it on the right looked a bit odd. Here's the final design. I ended up putting the scribble on the left side to balance out the right side's crowding. I like how this one turned out, but it still doesn't feel amazing. Finally, I decided to go SUPER big with this one. It came together really easily since there's such limited options on where to place things so I don't have any other progress shots of it. I do like this one the most since it feels more interesting to look at. If I were to redo it though, I would add more overlapping on the left since it seems to only happen on the right side. Out of them all though, I like my figma design the most, even if it loses the charm of having pen/marker texture.

Activity 2

When we got introduced to Scaniverse. The first thing I wanted to do was get myself scanned! Thank you Leah! This turned out so good and gave me a lot of encouragement when it comes to scans. After seeing my face get caught in some of my friends' scans, I wanted to try to scan myself in a horror-esque way. It might not fit the project concept, but I wanted to see how I could distort the scans to maximize the artistry. I wanted to have different distinct expressions for each angle, but I found it hard to figure out when to move towards the camera and when to change expressions. Glad to have experimented. I scanned Mia! I have no idea how Leah got the scan of me so good on the first try. For my second-ever scan though, I think this wasn't terrible. This is my first ever scan. I thought it looked ok until I realized the feet are fused to the paper and he's missing the right side of his stomach. The scan is no good in the back either... Oh my god he lost 20 pounds. Just kidding, but I was surprised to see how skinny he is in this angle of the scan considering how the front and back looked! For some reason, he also got a hole in his head... I think the material the duck's made of is weird for the camera for whatever reason? As far as I remember, no one was able to get a good scan of Mr Duck. I tried scanning my original shashtenge jewelry that I modelled in the first project. It lost all of its definition. It's super blurry and the chain detailing is terrible. I think the shine and tiny size of this piece made it hard for the camera to pick up the details. I'm surprised it looks even worse from the side view. Here's my penguin! He will be my next scan. Another angle for reference. After scanning, I looked at the model in Scaniverse and it looked pretty good from this angle! But then I saw this angle... For some reason the camera thought the background wall is part of his fin even though I made sure to focus on getting his fins. This is a different scan from the previous one (see the floor he's standing on) and this fin fusion problem kept happening! This side doesn't look too bad, until you see the dent in his butt. Sorry Mr Penguin! My corgi plush! He matches with my boyfriend's husky plush, hehe. Side angle for reference. Back angle for reference. Ugh, he fused with the carpet (the reference photos were taken retroactively, so he got scanned on the carpet instead of the boxes). A golden eagle statue my grandparents gifted my brother. My brother forgot to take this with him while moving out a year ago. He said I can keep it safe until he moves to a bigger place. Another reference photo. This is the silly setup I had. Two storage boxes from Ikea stacked on top of each other. The pattern on the top felt like it helped with the scans? It's kind of similar to the patterns on the scanning papers. First angle of the scan. It looks perfect! I was so surprised the edges were so crisp and well defined! The black podium the eagle sits on got a little distorted, but I actually really like the liquid-y effect it has. Almost feels like the eagle's landing on water or something. The side angles look amazing too! I'm so happy with this scan! Unfortunately the back has a small hole and lost some of the definition, but overall I'm super happy with this scan!

Reflexive Workshop 1 & 2

While I helped Mia with the presentation, Emma made this data selfie. It represents her struggles with anxiety (specifically, Generalized Anxiety Disorder) autonomy. Unfortunately, many people develop a confirmation bias about anxiety disorders due to many stereotypical assumptions they make, such as getting anxious about every little thing. While Generalized Anxiety Disorder can make you feel as though you have no control over your environment, other people may experience anxiety disorders differently. Emma's self-portrait represents the feeling of being overcome by a detrimental amount of anxiety. Kurtis also created a selfie. His selfie represents his struggle with the sunk cost fallacy and the fear of failure. Due to his anxiety, he would tunnel vision into finding and developing the “right” idea. Unfortunately, as a result, he's in a position where he's overwhelmed by work. Mia's selfie represents her struggles with anxiety and confirmation bias. Due to her anxiety creating a pre-existing idea of what will happen, she feels behind, stressed, and overwhelmed. The bias continues to re-inforce itself because of 24/7 thoughts about school—even when waking up.
